Pickup day is right around the corner, and we’re so excited for you to bring your new birds home! To help make the transition as smooth as possible, here are a few important tips for introducing your new pullets to an existing flock.
Introduce New Birds at Night
Always place new birds into the coop after sundown, when it’s fully dark. Chickens are much calmer at night and less likely to react aggressively. Introducing them during the day can disrupt the established flock’s routine and may lead to pecking or fighting.
Timing Matters – 16 Weeks Is Ideal
In our experience, 16 weeks of age is the “magic number” for flock integration. At this stage, pullets have enough size and maturity to better handle the natural pecking order adjustments within an established flock.
Provide Extra Food & Water Stations
Add an additional feeder and waterer in a separate area of the coop. This gives your new birds a chance to eat and drink without having to compete right away, especially while the flock is still sorting out its social structure.
Expect a Pecking Order Reset
Some pecking and minor chasing is completely normal. Your flock is simply reestablishing its hierarchy. Keep an eye out, but don’t panic unless there is excessive aggression or injury.
With a little patience and the right approach, your flock should settle in nicely!
