BREED FACTS:

Barred Plymouth Rocks, commonly known as Barred Rocks, are one of America’s most iconic and dependable heritage chicken breeds. Recognized for their black-and-white barred feather pattern and easygoing personality, they have remained a favorite among backyard chicken keepers and small farms for generations.

The breed originated in the United States during the mid-1800s and was first exhibited in Massachusetts. Barred Rocks were developed as a hardy dual-purpose breed capable of providing both reliable egg production and quality meat. Their adaptability and consistent performance quickly made them one of the most popular chicken breeds in America throughout the early 20th century.

Barred Rocks typically begin laying around 24 to 26 weeks of age and produce approximately 250 large brown eggs per year. They are known for being dependable layers throughout much of the year, including cooler weather, making them a reliable addition to backyard flocks focused on steady egg production.

These chickens are widely appreciated for their calm, friendly, and intelligent temperament. Barred Rocks are generally easy to handle, adapt well to free-ranging environments, and tend to integrate smoothly into mixed flocks. Their hardy nature and approachable personality make them especially popular with beginner chicken keepers and families.

Today, Barred Rocks continue to be one of the most recognized and trusted heritage chicken breeds in the United States, valued for their classic appearance, dependable laying ability, and well-rounded personality.
