BREED FACTS:
Black Sex-Links rose to popularity in the mid-to-late 20th century as small farms and backyard keepers wanted hens that laid heavily without the management demands of commercial strains. They became especially popular with homesteaders and small farms because they combine hybrid productivity with hardy, adaptable traits. Not to mention their great egg laying capability of laying 280 large brown eggs per year.
They are typically created by crossing a barred rock hen with a red rooster line. The result is a “sex-linked” chick that can be identified at hatch by down color, making flock selection simple and practical.
Black Sex-Links are known for being calm, friendly, and people-oriented. Many owners describe them as curious and confident without being aggressive. They integrate well into mixed flocks and tend to adapt easily to both free-range and coop settings. Hardy and steady, they are well-suited for beginners while still productive enough for experienced poultry keepers.
