BREED FACTS:

French Black Copper Marans are a highly sought-after heritage chicken breed best known for producing some of the darkest brown eggs in the poultry world. Their rich black plumage accented with copper-colored neck feathers gives them a bold and elegant appearance that has made them extremely popular among backyard chicken keepers and specialty egg enthusiasts.

The Marans breed originated in the port town of Marans, France during the early 1900s. French breeders developed the birds using a combination of local French fowl and imported game birds to create a hardy dual-purpose breed capable of thriving in wet coastal environments. The French Black Copper variety eventually became the most recognized and desirable color variety due to both its appearance and exceptional egg color.

French Black Copper Marans gained major popularity in America as interest in colorful specialty egg baskets increased. Their famous dark chocolate-colored eggs are often considered one of the premium features of backyard flocks and are highly valued by homesteaders, farmers markets, and farm-to-table operations.

These hens typically begin laying around 24 to 28 weeks of age and produce approximately 200 to 220 large dark brown eggs per year. Egg color is often darkest at the beginning of the laying season and can gradually lighten over time before deepening again after molt cycles.

French Black Copper Marans are generally calm, quiet, and easygoing birds. They tend to be independent but friendly, adapting well to both free-range environments and managed backyard flocks. Their hardy nature, unique egg color, and striking appearance continue to make them one of the most desirable heritage breeds available today.
