Barnevelder
Specialty Breed*
The Barnevelder originated in the Barneveld region of the Netherlands in the early 1900s. Developed by crossing local Dutch farm birds with hardy Asiatic breeds, they quickly became known for their rich, dark brown eggs and striking feather patterns. Their signature double-laced plumage gives them a beautifully scalloped appearance, making them an eye-catching addition to any flock.
Barnevelders are calm, friendly, and easy to handle, which makes them a great choice for families and beginner chicken keepers. They adapt well to both free-range setups and traditional coops, and are known for being hardy in a variety of climates. Their gentle nature also helps them get along well in mixed-breed flocks.
This breed is valued not only for beauty, but also for utility. Barnevelders typically lay around 180–200 large dark brown eggs per year, often maintaining good production even in colder seasons. As a dual-purpose breed, they also offer a good body size for meat if desired.
Loved for their combination of reliability, beauty, and calm temperament, Barnevelders continue to be a popular and charming choice for backyard flocks and small farms alike.
