Black Star
Standard Breed
The Black Star chicken, also known as the Black Sex-Link, is a hardy and dependable sex-linked breed developed by crossing a Barred Plymouth Rock hen with a Rhode Island Red or New Hampshire Red rooster. Created in the mid-20th century for efficient egg production, this cross allows for easy sexing at hatch with females being solid black, while males have a white head spot.
Known for their friendly and calm temperament, Black Stars are ideal for families, homesteads, and backyard flocks. They are easy to handle, adapt well to the backyard environment, and perform well in a variety of climates. Though not typically broody, they make up for it with exceptional productivity and consistent behavior.
Black Star hens are outstanding egg layers, producing 250–300 large brown eggs per year and often continuing to lay through the winter. They reach maturity early, beginning to lay between five and six months of age. Because of their reliability, docile nature, and attractive dark plumage with hints of copper, they have become one of the most popular choices for small farms and hobbyists looking for dependable layers that are as beautiful as they are productive.
