BREED FACTS:

Swedish Flower Hens are a rare landrace chicken that developed naturally in the countryside of southern Sweden. Rather than being selectively created for a specific color or feather pattern, these birds adapted over generations to their local climate and farm environment. Their name comes from the white-tipped feathers scattered across their plumage, giving each bird the appearance of being covered in small flowers.

One of the most fascinating characteristics of Swedish Flower Hens is that no two birds look exactly alike. Their base colors can include black, red, brown, blue, gray, orange, and gold, all decorated with varying amounts of white mottling. Some birds may also develop a small crest, adding even more variety and personality to the breed.

These hens are dependable layers, producing approximately 150 cream to light-tan eggs per year. Most begin laying around 20 to 24 weeks of age. While they are not considered a high-production breed, they are valued for their steady laying ability, natural hardiness, and ability to remain productive in a backyard or homestead environment.

Swedish Flower Hens are generally known for being calm, friendly, curious, and highly capable foragers. They enjoy exploring their surroundings and do especially well when given room to roam. Their adaptable nature allows them to integrate well into mixed flocks, while their alertness and natural instincts make them excellent free-range chickens.

Once nearly extinct, the breed was rediscovered during the 1970s in a small number of farm flocks located in the Swedish villages of Vomb, Tofta, and Esarp. Today, Swedish Flower Hens remain a treasured choice among backyard chicken keepers, prized for their rich history, genetic diversity, hardy nature, and the completely unique appearance of every bird.
